Making an SOP in Less Than One Minute Using Claude
Documenting an SOP is easy, and Claude makes it easier still - here's how you can document a procedure in a minute.
I've previously shown how easy it is to create a process map with AI. But in talking to business owners, I realized something: mapping a process isn't seen as being that useful (though it absolutely is). What does get their attention? Writing an SOP.
So let's do that today.
There Are Several Ways to Create an SOP
If you have a standard way of working each time — a repeatable task you do on your screen — tools like Scribe or MagicHow are excellent. You run through the steps once, and they document everything for you. We'll cover those in a future video.
But today I'm taking a different approach. Starting from the process diagram we created previously, I want to create an SOP for a step that isn't screen-based — it's research-based. Specifically, I want to document what I expect my virtual assistant to deliver as part of our initial outreach preparation.
The Task: Preparing a Discovery Call Package
This requires a more general research approach, so I'll detail the outcome I expect and turn to my LLM of choice (Claude, in this case — a level 2 automation) to help me write the SOP.
Here's what I need my VA to prepare before a discovery call:
Prospect details from our lead gen agency
Funnel details (how the prospect came to us)
A company snapshot: industry, headcount, location — pulled from LinkedIn
Key stakeholders: identifying the CEO/Founder and the executive team, either from LinkedIn or the company website
Recent public presence: LinkedIn posts, blogs, news mentions, podcast appearances
I put this into Claude, and within a minute, I have a working SOP. Done.
"I'll Just Hop on a Call and Explain It"
This is the trap most business owners fall into. It feels easier and quicker to just get on a call and walk someone through your thought process. But that time adds up fast. Every new hire, every handoff, every time someone forgets a step — you're back on another call, explaining the same thing.
Activities that are meant to save you time start dragging you down.
Version 1 Is All You Need to Start
Is the SOP we made in under a minute perfect? No. But it doesn't need to be.
It's version 1. It captures the core of what you need. It's easy to build upon. And here's the real unlock: you can ask the person following it to improve it. They'll spot the gaps, the unclear steps, the missing context — and your SOP gets better with every iteration.
The barrier to creating SOPs was never complexity. It was starting. And with an LLM, starting takes less than a minute.
Stay tuned — in the next video, we'll use more detailed SOP-building tools to take things further.
